Chef is an amazing cooking and shopping application. Enter in a shopping list and it will sort it automatically into common categories found at the grocery store. Then sort and reorganize lists in a few different ways. Search through a large database of recipes with reviews and pictures. After setting up a free account, it allows users to save the recipes to their iPhone. Also add the ingredients to shopping lists with just one touch.

Join the community of over 25,000 chefs just like you with the Chef's Little Helper iPhone and iPod Touch app. Chef gives you access to your recipes from your phone, allows you to search our database of over 13,000 recipes, and easily create customized grocery lists with the touch of a button.

Add your recipes through www.chefslittlehelper.com and have them automatically sync to your iPhone or iPod touch. Build your own cookbook with the recipes you enter along with any of the recipes other chefs have uploaded. You can organize the recipes in your cookbook by category or cuisine to easily find what you want to make. Plus all the recipes in the cookbook are synced to the iPhone or iPod Touch for offline viewing.

Once you find a recipe you like you can add all its ingredients to your grocery list with just a press of a button. The grocery list will automatically sort your items into the order you come across them in YOUR grocery store. Just configure Chef by telling it the order of the sections, and Chef will automatically determine which section each of the items belong to. Alternatively you can view your grocery list by the recipe they came from or you can choose to move them around any way you like. Then check off each item as you buy them. With a press of a button you can clear the whole list, or just the ones you've checked. When the time comes to cook the meal, use Chef to set up to four different timers so your food comes out perfect.

For the price, this app is truly exceptional. The developer is very responsive to feedback and has already implemented some changes I requested (Fusion, Nouvelle, Outdoor categories). The initial entry of recipes is more laborious than a $40 desktop software, but the ability to have your favorite recipes on your iPhone with you wherever you travel, search through a growing database of recipes, rate the recipes and offer feedback to the community, are all currently better than much more expensive options. I do wish you could add a recipe twice to the shopping list (or have the software calculate for shopping to double or triple the recipe). I really like how the shopping list automatically sorts ingredients into groups likely to be in the same aisle of the store, including the items that you add manually outside of a recipe. I use this exclusively now for my shopping lists even if I am not doing a recipe. With regard to recipe entry, if you start to add a photo, you have to finish by pressing Upload before you can add additional ingredients.
Some disappointments - 3 stars - August 14, 2009
Orientation to this app is awkward without any "Help" text available. Input of recipes time consuming, especially when they are just intended for personal use. How do I get the grocery list to work? No clue.

I would like this app if it were more stable. It crashes way too much!!!
